There are several items that are available n your home that may be obtained and used for improvised weapons should the need arise. Keep in mind that many of the weapons mentioned here are geared more towards the defense of your personal space, or in such your personal protection, against a sudden attack.
Now, many people will blow this all off and say that carrying a gun will solve the problem. Which, for many, it may very do. However, not everyone carries a gun with them everywhere, and there are those who do not have a permit to carry concealed where required.
In lieu of a firearm, and you find yourself needing self-defense, then that is where this article comes into play. Not everyone always remembers to make sure they arm themselves when out and about. It is for these individuals that we are making the following suggestions.
Any Heavy Object
Although, if you are in an area that is experiencing any type of trouble or unrest, it advised that you remove all large and heavy objects In that same vein if you are finding you need something for self-defense, any heavy object you find that you can pick up and throw can serve as a possible weapon.
Belts
If you choose to wear a belt, make sure it has a big belt buckle. Although a small belt buckle will hurt, a larger buckle will prove to inflict more pain and damage. The belt itself should be made of leather, as when used to hit an assailant, it will sting that much more.
Box Cutter
If you have ever used a box cutter and fallen victim to being cut, you will agree that this is one formidable weapon. In addition to being able to cause some damage, a box cutter is both affordable and easy to obtain.
Cane
Unless one is disabled or injured, it is hard for many to justify the carrying of a cane these days. Although in today’s world, the cane is not considered to be as much of a fashion item as it used to be. At the turn of the century, canes were commonplace in England. However, fashion wasn’t the only appeal. A cane would give a gentleman something with which to defend himself if needed. Back then, most canes would have a sword sheathed within it, which offered another level of defense.
Chemical
I am sure that everyone would agree that anyone on the receiving end of a supers soaker filled with bleach—well, this is not something pleasant to experience. However, the use of bleach for self-defense is the perfect substitute for a DIY pepper spray.
Extinguisher
This is one improvised weapon that serves to be used in multiple ways. You can use the contents to spray an attacker in the face if necessary. There is also the fact that, if appropriately wielded, an extinguisher can be a formidable weapon to hit and damage an individual.
Flashlight
Here’s a little tidbit that most individuals do not know—most flashlights on the market today are constructed with the purpose of self-defense in mind. So much so that they are usually heavily marketed to both security and law enforcement officers. Even though many of those we see today are becoming much small and lighter, if you should happen to have one of the older ones that required a C or D battery—well, those are just a club with a light attached! However, don’t despair, as if you shop around, you can still find a flashlight that will fit the bill.
Keys
This is one of the most suggested items for self-defense in most self-defense classes for women. You can easily place your keys between your finders, ball up your fist, and start punching away. In this manner, your punches will inflict a higher level of pain, especially if aiming for the eyes or other known areas of sensitivity.
Pens
Even though there are tactical pens on the market expressly made for personal defense, and everyday office brand pen can come in useful if the need arises. Those pens that are built tough, with a sharper point, would work best in a defense situation.
Piercing
In everyday life, we are reminded to be careful around anything that is sharp or pointy. But sharp and pointy can be a tremendous improvised self-defense weapon. When it comes to a pointy or sharp object, we are talking about serious business.
Purse Or Bag
Although a heavy bag or purse is not one that would be the best for self-defense, one of moderate weight and a durable strap would be very efficient for fending yourself off from an attacker. When shopping for your next purse, make sure that is has a solid strap attached.
Sock of Change
This is one that most of us have heard of before. A sock filled with change will provide a means to beat the tar out of an assailant if necessary. Making sure to use change, and not rocks, as, over time, rocks with their somewhat jagged edges will lead to the sock’s deteriorating.
Tire Iron
Many car owners make sure to keep the tools necessary to change a tire handy. As such, one of those tools, a tire iron, can be a very formidable weapon. It will easily bludgeon and assailant, and if you are for some reason pulled over, having one in your possession won’t send up any red flags.
Umbrella
If you live in an area of the country that receives a lot of rain, then the use of an umbrella is pretty much a given. Other than keeping you dry, an umbrella can serve to be an efficient means of self-defense. Many individuals keep an umbrella in their office or even in their car, just in case the weather chooses to take a turn for the worst. Admittedly, the choice of an umbrella for defense is not always the best decision, as it would look rather odd for someone walking around with one in good weather.
Many of these improvised weapons above are, for the most part, good for one-time use. That is why it is vital that you use what is available wisely and then get away from danger as quickly as you possibly can.
