Oddly enough, there are good reasons to consider slingshots for your choice of weapon when hitting the great outdoors. I say oddly enough because no one talks of these things in the survival community.
Understandable, given that they are not as effective as bows & firearms when it comes to propelling projectiles. However, just so you’re reminded, the latter two are costlier to buy & even use than slingshots. Plus, what if you find yourself in a position where all you have is a couple of slingshots?
I think a slingshot is worth owning. Let’s see my reasons for saying so.
6 Reasons to Consider Slingshots
Affordability
Slingshots are fair in prices and unarguably more affordable than other weapons. They cost about $20, only even in big box stores.
However, note that slingshots, like any product, can be cheap or expensive. There are always costly models featuring a lot of high-quality features. I’ve seen models as costly as $200.
The key thing to note here is that it is relatively cheaper & you can always start at the low end of the price spectrum. This will ensure you don’t lose much if you decide it isn’t a tool for you after some time.
Ease of Usage
While it is clear that using a slingshot expertly demands a lot of practice & patience, it is also obvious that using it is amazingly easy. Anyone could pick one for the first time & start firing, even if his shots are inaccurate.
Also, ammunition is reusable. You can collect used ammo to use again. Cost is limited.
Meanwhile, you can choose from a couple of ammo, which are:
- Clay shot: A sustainable ammo that you don’t have to collect after shooting. It’s likely to shatter anyway.
- Plastic shot. A shot made out of plastic that’s best for beginners since it doesn’t inflict fatal damage. It has to be collected after use since it is unfriendly to the environment.
- Ball bearings: Often fatal if the target is hit; these are solid metal bearings designed to incapacitate a target.
- Lead shot: Like a ball bearing too, but softer & impact is not harsh. What it lacks in this, it, however, makes up for in toxicity, as its lead composition is toxic.
- Rocks: Free available everywhere, yet very deadly. Not to be used except to damage a target.
Discrete Carry
The slingshot is a compact & lightweight weapon, so carrying it can be discreetly done in your backpack or car, or even a pocket. You don’t have to worry about getting tired due to heaviness or anything.
And lest I forget, you don’t need a license to conceal carry.
Suitable for Hunting
Mostly depending on the model & type of ammo you’re using, a slingshot can be very deadly. It is, therefore, a good tool for hunting small games & some medium-size games. You can easily scare critters away too.
There are even accessories that will enable your slingshot to fire full-length arrows.
Concluding the Reasons to Consider Slingshots
There are great reasons to consider slingshots. They are affordable to buy, easy to use & can be easily carried. Have you tried one before? Would you recommend it or not?
