Every prepper would cherish the right storage solutions for small spaces. Because storage space is one of the greatest challenges that we face. As preppers, we recognize the importance of storing food ahead — we make hay while the sun shines. But, what happens when there’s no yard to make hay on, when there’s no space to store our foods in?
6 Storage Solutions For Small Spaces
A person who owns a large apartment with a sizable basement or food store will hardly find this relatable. But chances are most of us can. The lot of us live in one-room apartments, mobile homes, RVs, condos, or in my case, a single bedroom cottage. Obviously, we don’t have sufficient space for the closet and normal pantry space, much more an emergency stockpile storage space.
Consider the six elements essential for food survival (moisture, oxygen, temperature, light, time & pests) and the problem compounds further.
However, this isn’t the end of your prepper’s life. With some creativity and insightful thinking, everyone can squeeze some storage spaces out of their already cramped homes. Let’s look at six effective storage solutions for small spaces below.
How About Some Shelves Under The Stairwell?
[
The space under the stairwell is not only awkward; it is also useless (in most homes anyway). Well, not anymore. You can easily build some shelves for food storage. If you don’t fancy the idea, how about arranging some buckets alongside the back wall, and then installing a board on top? This solution will help you store at least ten cans or tins of packaged foods.
The Space Above The Washer & Dryer
Basically, the space above the washer & dryer isn’t ideal as it is prone to humidity and heat. Yet, if you can diligently rotate your foods annually, this area is just perfect for storing tinned foods or Mylar bags containing oatmeal, rice, or beans.
How About Some Shelves In Your Closet?
Nearly every closet contains much deeper space than required for your hanging wears. You can put the space behind the clothes to good use by building one or two shallow shelves that will be wide enough to store canned goods, and this won’t even affect your clothing arrangements in any way.
The Back Of Your Door Passes Too
You can build some shelves on the backs of every door in your home, or maybe you leave out the main entrance. Alternatively, you can buy door shoe organizers, which are fortunately cheaper and will hold bottled or canned foods just well.
Stack Some Cans Behind The Sofa
You can also stack some cans of food behind your couch. If the sofa is too tight against the wall, push it out a few inches – that’s more space created.
The Space Under The Sink
Provided your sink is perfectly sealed and does not leak, you can install shelves under it. The ideal should be wide enough to store soda – or jugs containing rice or beans. This area is perfect, but you must ensure that the foods are tightly sealed.
Conclusion
A small apartment doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t store emergency foods. As you can see, all it takes is some creativity. In the subsequent part of this blog, we’ll look at more storage solutions for small spaces. Bookmark this page.
