Our discussion on the extinct skills that may still matter when SHTF has now stretched three articles. Indeed, it is alarming that we’ve neglected so many essential parts of survival.
There are no specific rules to survival. And there is no certainty to what poop may hit the fan. This hints that there’s no telling the skill that may be called into action. I believe you should have sufficient skill sets to handle whatever life throws at you for your best interest.
Let’s see four extra forgotten skills that may make the difference between life & death when disaster comes knocking.
Highlighting 4 Extra Extinct Skills That May Matter When SHTF
Making a Fire Manually
I’m sure one of your foremost activities as a boy scout or girl guide was building a fire naturally. But I could bet now that you haven’t tried out this skill in ages. You most probably have forgotten how to, in fact, or there are little areas you would make mistakes. The availability of matchboxes, lighters, ferrocerium rods & electric cookers has surely made it appear tiring to start a fire using any other means.
When civilization goes extinct & cities get overturned, I assure you that knowing how to build a fire using a stone will be a very valuable piece of skill. Very few of us can do this currently; it’d be in your best interest to be one of us.
Purifying Water
The purification of water had to be done manually when water corporations were not yet in existence. Purified water was rare then and yet necessary, as the absence of modern medicine meant diseases like diarrhea killed more easily.
As it stands today, few of us can capably purify water without the use of sophisticated equipment. Who even purifies water these days? You need to be able to purify water by boiling, iodine, bleaching, survival straw & solar distillation.
Food Preservation
I’m betting my third eye that you can see your home freezer right from where you’re seated now. Would I win? The constant power supply has made life much easier, but so has it taken away your ability to preserve foods manually. Pray tell, when power goes out, how do you intend to keep food for the future?
I suggest that you build a cellar now where you can store non-perishable foods, making sure that it shields the items from direct sunlight, is well ventilated, free of pests & will always stay dry. You can always use the snow to preserve your food items when it’s winter.
Weather Prediction
These days, you only have to turn on your TV or open your weather app on your smartphone to stay ahead of the weather. An excellent thing, given that weather prediction, is essential to surviving SHTF scenarios. But what happens when you can’t use your smartphone & there’s no power for your TVs?
Some old methods of doing so involve the study of the clouds & skies. This can also be done by perceiving the smell of the atmosphere. You can look at the altitude of birds in flight to predict the weather.
Concluding the Extinct Skills That May Still Matter When SHTF
Apparently, there are tons of survival skills that we’ve abandoned due to the convenience of modern life. While technology has undeniably revolutionized life in a positive way, we can’t argue that it has upped the count of extinct skills that may still matter when SHTF. You should go through the articles addressing this topic & hone whichever of these skills you haven’t mastered.
