Foods that last forever are essential in your survivalist pantry. Foods in cans and jars can only last for so long. Give them a few years, and they are back to the ashes. That can be frustrating, given that you’ll have to restock your pantry as soon as this happens. This is not only stressful but also costly.
As a smart prepper, you must be prepping to save money as well. Plus, you wouldn’t want to be caught in an SHTF scenario with expired foods simply because you’ve been unable to refill your supply.
Let us look at seven foods that last for eternity below.
7 Foods That Last Forever
Natural Sweeteners
Natural sweeteners are especially long-lasting. Honey, for example, does not have an expiry date. It simply has no date to get spoiled and lose nutrients, as long as it is stored in a basic container that keeps flies and germs out. I know this because a jar of honey that’s spent over 5500 was recently found, and it was edible, with no difference in taste or quality.
Raw honey is filled with beneficial nutrients & antioxidants, so it’s even more of a sweetener. However, I advise you to be careful with your purchases as some stores package honey-flavored corn syrup as real honey.
You should always stock up on other sweeteners like maple syrup & white sugar.
Seasonings
In its pure, yet to be iodized form, salt will last for eternity. It is a natural mineral and removes moisture itself. So, there’s no reason for it to get spoiled. Salt adds flavor to foods and also works fine as a meat preservative if used properly. Remember to come along with whole spices as well.
Pure Maple Syrup
Pure maple syrup, when enclosed in a container, may last forever. Even if it becomes moldy after some time, you can always boil, skim & restore the syrup without diminished flavor or quality. Just ensure that you store it unopened.
White Rice
If stored at a temperature of 40° Fahrenheit in tightly sealed food storage cans, white rice will last for as long as 35 years. That’s nearly a lifetime. Obviously, this may be the perfect carbohydrate to have in your pantry.
Dried Beans
Dried beans last just as long as rice — 30+ years! When stored in air-tight containers, the protein will still be edible, as long as it was well de-moisturized before storing it. However, the taste & texture of dried beans do not remain the same after years but will be eatable by most standards notwithstanding.
Soy Sauce
Just the ideal sauce to spread on your white rice, tightly sealed soy sauce will last for nearly forever, courtesy of its high level of saltiness.
Hard Liquors
If you’re a lover of hard liquor, you’ll be extremely pleased that regardless of what happens, your collection of liquor will not go to waste. Yes, liquor lasts forever. The flavor may be slightly different from what you’re used to, depending on the drink’s quality, but it can still be enjoyed.
Concluding The Foods That Last Forever
There are a handful of other foods that last forever, including sugar, pemmican & powdered milk. That aside, I suggest that you rotate your pantry supply because the foods mentioned above do not make up a complete diet. You have to store foods that expire in a few years too. What you do is move such foods into the kitchen when they have 1 or 2 years to expire and refill your pantry. That way, you’re saving cash and remaining adequately prepared.
