Knowing how to implement some on-grid protection methods for livestock when SHTF may be the major reason you’ll see through the disaster. I say this because livestock is precious during a crisis. They can serve as food, and milk from them is healthy & nourishing too. We’ve previously discussed off-grid ways to keep your livestock safe, and now it’s time to see modern ways to do so.
Here we go.
3 On-grid Protection Methods for Livestock When SHTF
Alarms
While you can always implement several forms of livestock protection when the poop hits the fan, it’s necessary to realize that these systems can be breached when you’re unaware. You can’t keep guard for 24 hours a day every week; you have to rest too. Having a notification system that kicks you into life is pertinent.
Alarms require little electrical power to work, or you can make do with a solar generator. By placing incognito alarms on your property, preferably your gate, fence & in the shelter, you’d have the element of surprise to knock the intruder out.
Say, the scavenger has surveyed and has figured out that you’re asleep; he is sure to become more relaxed. So, imagine his confusion when an alarm system comes on the moment he steps on your property. The ideal system is that which combines a blaring noise with potent floodlights. These will prevent the criminal from hearing & keep him blinded too. That’s a hell of an advantage.
Motion Detectors
Equally as pertinent as alarms, if not more. A motion detector detects any form of movement (be it human or animal) and sets off an alarm to alert you. This may be better than the alarm system, given that all it needs to come alive is a slight detection of movement.
A solar generator will do fine for a motion detector, too, as it requires little light to function too. On some occasions, this system may alert you of birds or mere rodents, except you set a specific weight limit to be exceeded. If you set up your motion detector far on the outskirts of your property, you’re alerted of whatever threat is at hand before it even gets to your neighborhood.
Electric Fencing
This is a prevalent on-grid protection technique. It is the presence of electricity in your fences to keep intruders out. This fence may not even have barbed wires, so it appears inviting to criminals. You can set the charge for your fence to a low voltage if you are okay with mere shakes & wouldn’t want to hurt the scavenger severely.
I advise that you navigate between high and low voltages according to certain factors. You can keep things low during the day when anyone could come in contact with the fence. But when it’s late, set things very high & go to bed with your rifle by your head. And when the alarm comes blaring, be ready to disperse bullets into an electrocuted criminal.
